The art of landscaping has a rich, fascinating history that dates back to ancient times. From the hanging gardens of Babylon to the sprawling parks of modern cities, people have been shaping & modifying the land around them for thousands of years. Looking back at different layouts of historical landscaping examples can be a great way to find inspiration for your next project. This concept is nothing new, often time some of the greatest designers & tastemakers look to the past for inspiration for their art & creations.

Hanging Gardens of Babylon by Ferdinand Knab – World History Encyclopedia

One of the earliest examples of landscaping can be found in the hanging gardens of Babylon, which were built around 600 BCE. These gardens were an engineering marvel, consisting of a series of terraces supported by massive walls & columns. The terraces were filled with various plants, trees, as well as flowers, creating a lush, beautiful space that was a source of pride for the Babylonians.

Another early example of landscaping can be found in ancient Egypt , where people built elaborate gardens & waterways around their homes/temples. The ancient Egyptians believed that the gardens they created were an extension of the natural world; they used a variety of plants & animals to develop a sense of balance/harmony. In addition to being a source of beauty & enjoyment, these gardens were also an essential source of food & medicine. One could look here for inspiration & design a waterway that brings tranquility as well as a stronger sense of nature to your yard.

In ancient Greece/Rome, landscaping took on a more functional purpose, with people creating gardens & parks designed for leisure enjoyment. The Greeks & Romans built large public spaces that were filled with a variety of plants, trees, & sculptures, creating a sense of grandeur. They also incorporated features like fountain water features, which added a sense of movement/life to their gardens. You will find many examples of people looking to the Romans/Greeks for inspiration in the use of statues in modern-day yards.

The art of landscaping continued to evolve over the centuries, with people from different cultures or regions adapting the practice to suit their preferences. In the Middle Ages, for example, European gardens were often designed to reflect the religious beliefs of the time, with carefully planned paths/plants that symbolized different aspects of the Christian faith.

New York City – A.K.A The Big Apple.

In the 19th century, the rise of the middle class, coupled with the growth of urban areas, led to a new focus. They were balancing the rise in development needs with public access to parks and green spaces. People began to create gardens as well as parks around their homes, using a variety of plants, trees, or other elements to create a sense of serenity. The introduction of new tools & techniques also made it possible to create larger, more elaborate gardens, allowing people to express their creative vision in new ways. This is seen today in New York City’s Vibrant balcony/terrace layouts, which now come with many city gardening options.

Today, landscaping is a thriving/diverse field, with people using a wide range of techniques or materials to create beautiful, functional outdoor spaces. Whether a small backyard garden or a large public park, landscaping allows people to connect with nature to develop a sense of beauty/harmony in their environment.
